No doubt you know how much I love animals, so you won’t be surprised that it’s taken me a while to be ready to share the loss of my dear little black cat. She was 17, still loving and feisty, but going downhill when she had a stroke on the night of August 9th. We were both lucky to find the emergency vet who mercifully helped her over the rainbow bridge. Leo and I miss her, but he has stepped right up into the position of #1 snuggler. I’m also lucky to have the many photos I’ve taken since she found me on September 9th, 2009. I hope you might be inspired by some of the scenes that made our lives together so enchanted.
Lucky got her name when she showed up crying in a tree after a night in a storm and curled up in my arms saying “I’m never going to leave you!” Of 20 kittens and a ferret who came begging, (all got homes) she’s the only one who got to stay here in paradise. We wanted everyone to know she would bring only love and GOOD luck.Lucky was happy to pose for the Halloween cards I made……but as a black cat whose relatives have been demonized over the centuries, I suspect she would encourage you to reject fear and racism. (Especially when you vote.) Lucky loved helping me fold laundry from the dryer……and helping me wrap gifts……but catching mice was the best job. She even taught Reno to put them in the bathtub so they couldn’t hide under the fridge. We sure appreciated that! She loved lying in the sun and always added to the art!I think she wanted to be in my exhibits.Could she have known how beautiful she was?But being outside was the best. Climbing on the arbor for a good view of the world…… sitting on the dock watching the geese and Greenie…… or hiding in trhe wildflowers watching a beaver.Yuck! After learning how frogs taste…she just enjoyed their company…… and searched for fawns. She knew connecting was better than consuming……and that they’d be back to visit when they were grown.Leo is so much bigger and stronger than Lucky, but knew there was enough for all. Feed the elders and children first.Every eulogy needs a reminder that nobody’s perfect. Yes, Lucky occasionally lounged on the table. Wise being that she was, she was never into luxury, but didn’t she look lovely on brocade.Lucky waited for me to come to bed.If Jane Goodall is right, and who would know better than she, Lucky and all my precious friends will be waiting for me…… Over the Rainbow Bridge.
